History and the Future game is now open

This is one of our three concurrent epic-length airline sim scenarios. The game starts in the 1950s and runs all the way into 2035. If you like long-term planning, fleet transitions, and seeing the industry evolve, this is the one for you!

This game world follows the standard settings for long AirwaySim games:

  • Time span: 1950 - 2035, at 30 minutes per game day.
  • Normal difficulty level, Epic length scenario.
  • All airports worldwide and all aircraft models included.
  • Overall play duration is about 1.5 years.
  • Special rule: The "out of HQ" aircraft limit is disabled (geopolitical limitations are still in force).
  • Special rule: Startup selection of aircraft is limited. There are no "long-range" aircraft available in the used aircraft market when the game starts.

Game play related settings specific for this scenario:

  • The used aircraft selection is very limited since the game starts in year 1950, and you should use some cheap war-surplus DC-3s and similar planes to get going. There is a limited number of CV240/CV340 fleet aircraft available, but these will most likely be very popular.
  • If you are using the Easy Start mode, you should pick the short-haul airline as your starting mode. Note that in some cases the Easy Start mode might not be able to pick suitable routes for you, and then you must revert to Advanced Starting mode.
  • Please remember that this game follows the standard and real-world setup for the economy and political rules. The expansion outside your own HQ country does not become available until the 1990s and onwards (refer to manual for the basing rules).
  • Cargo demand in 1950s is very low.

If it has been a while since you started at early stages in a major AirwaySim game, here are a few reminders and tips:

  • The game clock is paused for the first day and will start moving after 24 hrs.
  • The used aircraft market will refresh several times during the first static 24 hour day (but you can only make two orders for aircraft during the first day).
  • There is a good supply of used aircraft available to begin with, but the used aircraft market will soon become limited and the popular aircraft types are sold/leased very quickly. Take care when picking the aircraft you plan to use and plan to order aircraft directly from the manufacturers.
  • New aircraft ordering will be available after the time starts to move (= from day 2 of the simulation), but it is of course always recommended to lease several used aircraft to begin with.
  • Be patient with the route sales figures since your Route Image grows slowly. Do not spend all your cash on planes at once, remember to leave a good reserve. It takes time to gain profits and there might be unexpected early problems..
  • Some popular airports will for sure become limited on airport slots soon. This is normal and you should use larger aircraft or other airports in that case. Please remember that slots are only available when the airport infrastructure expands.
  • The passenger demand will grow steadily during the course of the game, and is rather low at the very beginning.
  • Consider joining an alliance from early stages of the game, they are great resources for improving your game play (tips and help from fellow players).

Welcome to join the latest AirwaySim airline game and have fun!

History and the Future final results (5/24 - 2/26)

After nearly two years of play, the epic-length History and the Future scenario has reached the year 2035 and is now closed. The game opened in May 2024 and ran from 1950 to 2035 in-game.

A total of 32 airlines managed to operate from day one all the way to the final day without a single bankruptcy, a new record! This is an outstanding achievement in a scenario of this scale and duration, and each of these players will receive 10 Credits as a reward for their long-term commitment and performance.

In total, 107 airline members were still active at the end of the game, showing strong participation throughout the full timeline. Thank you to everyone who took part in this long-running scenario!

Remember to join the next round of History and the Future, starting in a few hours. Join from the Game Area already now!

You can view the final stats of this game from our forums.

New feature: Dark Mode

The Dark Mode theme is now available for testing at our website.

You can switch the theme from the top-right-corner's account dropdown menu (login required to see the option). The main website outside the Game Area should be fully complete and look fine in dark theme, and in the Game Area, the newer v2.0 UI pages should be in good shape too. However, as usual, some colors selections may still need tuning - feedback and improvement ideas are welcome.

Note that the forum and older in-game pages (old v1.5 UI) are all not fully polished, but should remain usable; we will only adjust these old pages if something is clearly wrong. There are also some technical limitations to the bar/pie/line charts so after switching the theme you may see light themed charts before the background data and cache refreshes.

Please send feedback in the forums, or in our Discord at the #newdarkmode channel.

With this feature completed, we're moving to finalize the Scheduling 2.0, as per our development roadmap.

New aircraft image library

The completely rebuild AirwaySim aircraft image library is now in use!

This is the largest single visual upgrade we have made to the aircraft data, and the new images cover all of the ~700 aircraft variants in the database. The new images fully replace the old low-resolution pictures with higher quality images that look significantly sharper in the UI. The goal has been consistency, technical and historical accuracy, and a better overall presentation across the whole aircraft range, from early classics to modern aircraft.

Each existing image in the library was enhanced to meet these standards, but additionally over 200 images have been re-sourced for better quality and better technical accuracy. All aircraft images have now also era-appropriate visual styles and liveries to give you an evolving aviation history timeline.

A wide list of other smaller updates have also been made, including finalizing the Dynamic aircraft manufacturer names feature and thus fully completing the Fleet Commonality v.2.0 update. See Changelog for details.
